DNR -V-Right to life

by lyndlj @ 2006-02-25 - 11:17:53

The latest sign of the disregard and contempt that the elderly are treated with in this country is brought to light in an article in The British Medical journal advising care and Nursing homes to instigate a Do Not Resuscitate policy.
According to the BMJ " The procedure rarely succeeds and the resources would be better spent on improving care in other areas" Another example of the Medical proffesions ageism views or a practical answer to funding shortfalls in carehomes and hospitals?
There has already been a protest over ageism being shown in hospitals where five years ago it was discovered that they were practising DNR without prior consultation with patients or thier families. This led to the drawing up of new guidelines whereby both the patient and family were able to discuss whether or not they wished to be resuscitated.
Apparently this new policy would issue Care/Nursing homes with documents outlining the risks of resuscitation on elderly patients and any patients that opted to have resuscitation it is then down to the medic attending the scene to decide whether or not to issue a DNR.
Jonathen Ellis policy manager for Help The Aged said " It is unethical to propose that there should be blanket removal of resuscitation protocols simply because 'they might not work' these arguments would not be used if the discussion were about a different age group"

There is already controversy surrounding the level of 'Care' given to many elderly residents in some homes. Reports of residents ' Starving' and being treated inhumanely seem to be a common occurence in the media. Not all homes are like this but the simple fact is NONE should be. These are peoples mums and dads, aunties and uncles,Granmas and Grandads. They have rights the same as anyone of us.
Why should they lose the right to decent care and ultmately to life simply because they are old??

I absolutely agree. Apart from depriving the elderly of their rights, this very questionable practice can lead to abuse by the unscrupulous. But then, the elderly have always had a raw deal in this country. With rising prices in fuel which is taking place now the £100 given by the State to help with fuel bills now looks pretty paltry. What the State is worrying about is that people are living longer, the population in general is ageing so who is going to pay?

The treatment of the elderly in this country is diabolical. And not just in Homes. I did a paper on Elder Abuse and the results when I researched were astounding.
Apart from the pittance they are expected to live off, help of any kind has to be fought for.

Unfortunately we are moving further and further into very selfish societies promulgated by selfish mentally unsound politicians! We are at their mercy like it or not!

We live in a society that does not value what has gone before.I am sure should a politicians relative need resuscitation there would be no hesitation?

I was in in an ICU at the beggining of the year with multi organ faliure, resp infection and septicimia. I had a DNR on my records that niether of my parents sighned or were told about. They swear they knew nothing about it.You can see I made it out but can this be true?

It is true sadly, apart from the research that I did I also worked with advanced dementia and though there was no DNR in place I have had patients that were just left without medical aid for hours on end in a hospital corridor waiting to be 'assessed'.

Many nursing homes have refused to bring it in, but if hospitals withold aid the patients are going to die anyway, they are classed as 'non emergencies' no matter what you take them in with!
