We all need them, they are our entry into the wonderful world of the Web. They give us the means to belong to sites like this and to browse and do all sorts of things we could`nt do without them. But just how good are they? How do we know that we are using the best one or even the right one for what we need?
I use America On Line otherwise known as AOL.Now when I first joined AOL I had done a lot of research as to which ISP to use. I know many people on AOL,and the service isn`t that bad compared to some servers. Or is it? For some reason AOL will suddenly decide to miss taking a months money and take two next month,or they will suddenly decide to take two months and still take next months at the right time? I tried getting in touch with them a few weeks ago, they had been paid up and for some reason cut me off? It took me Three quarters of an hour to get it through to the Automaton on the other end of the line that I was paid in advance and there was no earthly reason for suspension of services. Eventually I managed to penetrate the 'I must read from set board ' and got him to sort it out,it was back on by the time I put down the phone.
They are upgrading and there are days when my connection is so slow snail mail is faster! For some reason I cannot recieve mail to AOL from certain other servers,it just gets returned to sender. This has caused me to have two mail addys just so people can contact me.
So are we getting value for money with our ISP`s or is it just another case of poor or indifferent service because they know that we have to have this to be able to operate our systems?

I often wonder if the days of the ISP are numbered. Isn't it the modern day equivalent of the old telephone exchanges when each house was routed to a local building and the caller had a quick chat with "Samantha" or "Edith" on the desk who put them through to the number they desired? This was, of course, back in the days when people could answer their phone with welcomes like "Hello, Darlington 241?". At some point the exchanges vanished and people were able to navigate their way through the telephone network unaided. At some point, perhaps, there will be no ISPs. We will each be our own ISP and the webs will be ours to trawl via some great, national provision.
I have no technical background with which to back up my case, I must say - but I am ever the optomist. Perhaps someday I'll be "www.darlington241.com" (although I'd have to move to Darlington first).-

Over here AOL has a very bad reputation and they are like an octopus. Their software and an icon are on every new computer sold; which is a cushy deal for them. When I bought my new computer a year ago I told them I did not want AOL anywhere on it and they kept saying, but it comes with a free trial. Finally I said "Look, either it's not on it or I go to another company and another one until I find one who will sell me a computer with no AOL." and I got my computer.
I have had computer knowledgable people tell me that once AOL is actually activated on a computer it puts tentacles all through your system and makes it difficult for new providers to set you up. I don't know if this is true for sure, 'cause I've never had AOL. They send out discs through the mail and come ons for free service, etc. They even have displays with discs in the post offices. How did they work that? No one else does.
I'm very happy with the one I have now and have no plans to switch. Over here the fastest connection, and it really is, is broadband with your local TV cable company. Do y'all have that? I don't because it is very expensive and I don't care how fast it is. Mine is through my local phone company.
Good Luck!!-

There are so many over here it is hard to choose the right one.

I've been with Virgin around 2 years now and never had a problem. And they keep upgrading the service gratis. Don't imagine I'll be switching to AOL.
